What is Semantic Versioning?
Semantic Versioning (SemVer) is a universal versioning scheme for software. Given a version number MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH, you increment the:
- MAJOR version when you make incompatible API changes.
- MINOR version when you add functionality in a backward compatible manner.
- PATCH version when you make backward compatible bug fixes.
Additional labels for pre-release and build metadata are available as extensions to the MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH format (e.g., 1.0.0-alpha+001).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
By definition in the SemVer specification, bumping a major, minor, or patch version creates a completely new release profile, thus discarding previous pre-release or build metadata identifiers associated with the older version.
No. According to SemVer 2.0.0, build metadata (the part after the
+ sign) SHOULD be ignored when determining version precedence. Thus, 1.0.0-alpha+001 and 1.0.0-alpha+002 share the exact same precedence.
