What is a YAML Formatter?
A YAML Formatter is a developer tool used to structure, validate, and clean up YAML (YAML Ain't Markup Language) configuration files. Because YAML relies strictly on indentation (spaces) rather than brackets or tags for nesting data structures, spacing errors or mixed tabs can easily break configuration files like Kubernetes manifests, Docker Compose files, or CI/CD pipelines.
How to format YAML?
Formatting YAML using our browser-based utility takes only a few simple steps:
- Paste your code: Copy your raw or unaligned YAML configuration text and paste it into the YAML Input text area.
- Click Format: Hit the Format YAML button (or watch it evaluate automatically as you type). The parser will normalize spacing and syntax.
- Review & Copy: Clean, properly indented YAML appears in the output panel. Use the Copy Output button to capture the result.
YAML Formatter & Beautifier features
- Available tool controls: Docker Compose, Kubernetes Deployment, Format YAML.
- Input and option fields: YAML Input:, Formatted YAML Output:.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
It parses valid YAML and rewrites it in a consistent, readable layout. This makes nested mappings, lists, and configuration files easier to review and edit.
Yes. The formatter parses your input before producing output. If the YAML contains invalid indentation, malformed mappings, or another syntax error, it shows the parser error instead of formatting the file.
The output uses two-space indentation and normalizes the parsed YAML structure. Because formatting rebuilds the document from parsed data, comments and original whitespace are not preserved; review the result before replacing a source file.
