AI Prompt Token Estimator
Estimate the size of prompt text with live word and character counts plus a rough, model-independent token estimate.
This is a rough character-based estimate, not a model-specific tokenizer or API price calculation.
How this prompt estimate works
The counter uses the number of characters in the pasted text and estimates about one token for every four characters. That gives a quick way to compare prompt drafts, but it does not run the tokenizer for GPT, Claude, Gemini, or another model. Tokenizers split words, punctuation, code, and non-English text differently, so the actual count can vary.
What is included—and what is not
Only the text in this box is counted. Chat roles, system messages stored elsewhere, tool schemas, image or audio inputs, and the model’s response are outside this estimate. A prompt that fits here may still exceed a model’s context limit after the full request is assembled.
Use the estimate when editing prompts
Paste a draft, note the estimate, then remove repeated instructions or context that the model does not need and compare again. Keep constraints and examples that affect the answer; shortening a prompt is not useful if it removes required information. Before deployment or cost planning, check the exact model’s tokenizer and current provider pricing. This page does not calculate memory overhead or API expenses.
What this prompt estimator measures
It counts the words and characters in the prompt text you paste and derives a rough token estimate from its character length. It is useful for comparing drafts, but it does not measure memory use, exact model tokens, or API cost.
How to use AI Prompt Token Estimator
- Paste the prompt or context block you want to review.
- Compare its rough token, word, and character counts.
- Edit repeated or unnecessary text and compare again. Use the provider’s tokenizer for exact model counts.
