Package & Version Tools
Use these tools to understand version constraints before updating dependencies or publishing a package. Compare the installed version with the declared range and check ecosystem-specific rules, since npm, NuGet, and other registries can interpret package metadata differently.
What are Package & Version Tools?
Package and version utilities help read semantic-version ranges, compare releases, validate package manifests, and investigate dependency conflicts across common ecosystems.
Who uses these tools?
Developers maintaining application dependencies can use them before editing a manifest or investigating why a version range selected an unexpected release.
Common tasks in this category
- Compare two versions using semantic-version rules.
- Test whether a release satisfies a declared range.
- Validate package metadata and review a dependency conflict.
Check a version range before updating
Start by identifying the package manager and whether the dependency is direct or transitive. Compare the range in the manifest with the resolved version in the lockfile; a candidate can satisfy the declared range while the lockfile or another dependency constraint still keeps a different version installed.
Range syntax is ecosystem-specific. In npm, ^ generally allows compatible updates and ~ generally stays within a minor release line, with stricter behavior for some 0.x versions. NuGet uses different range notation. After checking a range, review the selected release notes and runtime compatibility, then run the project checks before changing a production dependency.
